Start With a Good Foundation

Funny how little things happen in your life and they bring up little memories of people and places that you otherwise might have forgotten.I was shopping at a little department store to take advantage of the Memorial Day sales and spent some time in the lingerie department. As I was flipping through the racks and looking at the new styles and colors, I could not help but overhear what another pair of shoppers were talking about.  The older woman of the pair was explaining how to pick out the Best Bra to her shopping companion, who I suspect was her granddaughter because of the age difference. I could be wrong, it may have been her daughter, but I really think it was her granddaughter.

That moment took me back about 20 years to a shopping trip with own grandmother. She worked in retail stores all her life and was the queen of shopping and fashion in my world. She taught me about selecting the right bras, panties, slips, and camis and called them our “foundation garments.” These are the items you put on to shape and lift a woman’s body parts and make the street clothes both fit better and look better on you. These days we also have Seamless shape wear as part of our foundation wardrobes, and I like the descriptive quality of the word “foundation” rather than the crass “underwear” or naughty connotations associated with “lingerie.”

One of my favorite new foundation items is the Bra and Cami with cleavage cover so that the deep necklines of so many fashion tees are still wearable in a more conservative atmosphere, such as church on Sundays. The tees can top anything from a pair of jeans to shorts or a skirt, but I don’t like to show so much cleavage at work and at church, so a pretty little cami is a simple and inexpensive fix to the modesty issue. Ad I thank my darling grandmother for teaching me these feminine tricks.

Remembering Our Servicemen and Women

Today is Memorial Day, and I was just thinking about how many good men and women have fought for our country and our freedom over these past 200 years or so. We are so fortunate to live in America, and I am so proud of our military.

Cross Your Fingers

Although my hubby does not talk much about work after he gets home each night, I can tell that the new job here is not what he was expecting. It bothers me to see him not happy with his job, especially since I won’t be working for a few years while the kids are young. Since the whole family is going to be depending upon him to support us, I would feel a lot better for his sake if he liked his job and came home happy each night.

So, tonight he came home and mentioned that another company is interested in interviewing him. A mutual friend mentioned the job opening last week, and they have talked on the phone twice. Now they actually want to meet him. So, I think that is a good sign and hope that this new company might give him a better reason to wake up each morning and look forward to going to work.

Cross your fingers for him that he does great in the interview and that they make him a nice offer – if he decides he wants to change jobs. I just want him to be happy.

Flowers Just Because

After lunch my husband said he had a few errands he needed to run and that he would be back in a few hours.  He returned two hours later with everything to make yummy ice cream sundaes and beautiful flowers.  He brought me flowers today for no reason other than he loves me.  I love that man.

A Night of Fun and Relaxation

Karen and her husband Joe were over tonight for dinner. We had the best steaks, baked potatoes, pasta salad, and lots of yummy treats for dessert.  I’m not the biggest meat eater but that steak was delicious!!! We got the steaks as a gift from my in-laws.   They ordered them online and had them sent directly to us.

I told Karen we should have dinner together more often because we had so much fun.  After dinner we played a few games and then decided we should all go over to their house to go swimming.  I love their pool.  It doesn’t make me nervous to bring the kids either because they have one of those really nice pool covers.  If they didn’t have the cover I’d be really worried every time I bring my kids over there.

We swam for a bit and then hung out in the jacuzzi.  It really was a great night. I can’t wait until we can do it again.  I told Karen I wouldn’t mind hosting dinner again if she would host dessert and swimming in her pool.  We set a date for next weekend, just in time for Memorial Day.

American Idol

Tonight we find out who the top two will be.  I usually don’t watch too many reality television shows but I’ve been watching this season.  My favorite, Casey Abrams, was already voted off but I still watch.  I’m not really sure who I want to win now that he is gone.

The show has always been nothing but a big popularity contest.  With that in mind, I bet Scotty will be a shoe-in. He has to have all of the young girl votes.  I like his voice.  It reminds me of old school country.  He is very clean cut and his voice matches.

I guess we have to wait and see who will be left at the end of the night.

Political Scandals

I don’t really understand why people feel like they need to be in everyone else’s business.  I could honestly care less if some famous person had an affair or fathered a child with someone out of wedlock.  It just seems pointless to waste our energy and time focusing on this in the news day in and day out.

I do not condone cheating or scandals I just think spending tons of money in the media advertising it all is a bunch of bologna.  There are plenty of other newsworthy stories out there that I’d rather be informed about.

Go West for the Best Candy

Until I started reading about chocolate and learning about candies, I did not realize that candy making was such a regional specialty.  People who live out West have always had See’s candies to enjoy, while those of us on the East Coast have not had the pleasure. The only reason I was ever introduced to See’s candies was when my Dad went on a business trip to California and he bought a box of See’s chocolates to bring home for my mom.  She opened the box right away and shared her special chocolates with everyone. They were so so good!

I’ll always be glad that my dad went on business trips once in a while. Although my mom was not happy to have him gone, sometimes for up to a week, we were always so happy to have him come home. He always brought us back something for a treat, and we always celebrated with a special dinner, including dessert!

Dad would tell us stories about the cities where he had traveled and about the people he met. Most of the time he would take the train, but when he had to go out West he would have to fly. I remember standing at the big glass window watching his plane taxi away from the gate. We were all standing there waving goodbye, jumping up and down, and we would always be there to meet his plane when he got back. But with security like it is now, no one is allowed to do that anymore. I miss those days.

Chocolate for Breakfast?

When did someone decide that chocolate was a good thing to have to breakfast? I have never really paid attention to the chocolate flavored breakfast cereals, although it seems that Coco Puffs have been around since before I was a kid. But now the Poptarts and frozen pastry strudels come in chocolate flavors, too.

The Poptarts have been out for a while, but I guess I never paid that much attention to the variety o flavors. I rarely buy them, and if I do, I buy the strawberry or blueberry filling flavors. I just can’t wrap my head around serving chocolate for breakfast.

Think We Should Stop?

signs-of-the-times

Found this photo on a church web site. I just had to share it here. I think they really want you to stop. But then again, people who like to go four-wheeling (not naming any names here!) would just see this as a challenge.
