Tourists, Musicians and Cowboys

A few nights ago, Craig Ferguson was in town for a one night stand up comedy show. I seriously thought about getting tickets to go but blew it off. I like the guy on TV but didn’t feel like blowing a couple hundred bucks to see him on stage.

So last night he was back on TV and talked about coming to Nashville. He had a show in St. Louis the night before and for reasons unstated he drove from St. Louis to Nashville. I can tell you the reason – you can’t get a decent flight from St. Louis to Nashville. It actually faster and a whole lot cheaper to rent a car and drive the 5 hours through Illinois and Kentucky.

So his routine last night was all about the predictable Nashville jokes. He joked on the guys wearing cowboy hats and belts with big buckles. He joked the women wearing fur – except they wear it because they were the ones who killed and skinned the animals. Ha ha.

Truth is, Nashville is a pretty cosmopolitan city. It is the state capital and the county seat, and the downtown is full of lawyers, bankers, stockbrokers and real estate companies. Plus publishing, healthcare and, don’t forget, music business professionals. You have to drive out of town quite a ways to find any farms or ranches.

The only people downtown who wear cowboy hats and big buckles are the tourists, a handful of musicians, noobs, and maybe 1 out of 100 will be a “real” cowboy.

The New Miss America

Tonight’s Miss America pageant was full of beautiful and talented women. After I saw them onstage, I knew right away that Miss Indiana Katie Stam would be crowned Miss America 2009.

She closely resembles one of the actresses on CSI Miami and I think it would be very cool for the CSI Miami writers to do an episode with both of them in it as sisters. That could be her big break, second only to this pageant. Katie is majoring in communications in college and has both the looks and the composure to be on TV. Congrats Katie!

Miss America 2009

Call me “Shallow Hal,” but I still like watching the Miss America pageants. I think it is nice to honor attractive, accomplished women and that young girls should be allowed to see that there are good role models for them besides the ho’s and the drug freaks promoted in the popular media, like Madonna, Pink, Lindsay, etc. Most of the Miss America contestants are wholesome, ambitious, talented, composed and attractive. It is good to showcase these qualities and I wish they (mass media, network TV, etc.) would do more to promote wholesome role models for our young people.

This year’s pageant is going to be held at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino, hosted by Mario Lopez. I plan to watch and I suppose I’ll be cheering for Ellen Carrington, this year’s Miss Tennessee, although Miss Texas is always a beautiful woman, too.

Semi Tough

For some reason I ditched regular TV tonight and decided to find a movie “On Demand.” I’ve been using the On Demand feature from Comcast for a couple months and I have to admit that I’m getting really spoiled with the convenience of seeing a movie not only when I want to watch but it lets me pause and rewind, as if it was a VCR tape or a DVD. Very cool for when you can’t hear a mumbled line and you want to know what they said.

The movie I chose was Semi-Tough, with Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson as two professional football players in a love triangle with the team owner’s daughter. There are some great lines in this movie that reflected the social times and values of the early 1970s.

One and Done

With a heavy heart I am writing this to acknowledge the loss yesterday of the Tennessee Titans to the Baltimore Ravens. It was not a good game. The Titans made so many mistakes with penalties and bad decisions on the field that I was banging my head on the wall in frustration.

The worst moment in the game was when the kicker missed a 51 yard field goal attempt. We really needed that field goal to keep the game alive and it might have even won the game for us. But he missed with a wide swing to the left of the goal posts and we were crushed. Done.

Congrats to the Ravens for the win. I have to say that to be a good sport, but I also have to say that I will not be cheering for the Ravens in the next round of the playoffs. Whoever is playing against the Ravens will get my support. If I even watch that game at all.

Way To Go, Titans!

Awesome game on Monday Night Football. The Titans scored first with a field goal, then the Colts answered with a touchdown and it looked like the Colts were going to win this game. but toward the end our QB saved the day. With several throws that only a seasoned quarterback like Collins could manage, we scored big and won the game.

Even the commentators mentioned the fact that a seasoned quarterback made the right plays in this game. And they remarked on the strong character it took for the Titans to not give up in the face of a loss to the Colts and rally around Collins to turn the game around and win.

I can NOT believe that the Titans are now 7 and 0. That is so awesome I am speechless.

Vince WHO??? If Coach Fisher even THINKS about dumping Collins he has lost his freaking MIND.

Monday Night Showcase

The Tennessee Titans have astonished everyone and made it through 6 straight games with a win for every one. They are actually the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL.

Tomorrow night they play at home on TV’s Monday Night Football. It will be interesting to see if they can make this a 7th win with all the pressure of going for a record plus being on Monday Night Football.

This will be a great opportunity for Collins to shine as quarterback. If he can wrangle another winning game, I hope they kiss Vince Young goodbye permanently.

Two For Three

Last night was the third regular season game for the Nashville Predators. The preseason pretty muched sucked, but now that the games really count, they have gotten a little more serious about scoring.

We lost the first game to one of the worst teams in the league. That sucked and made me doubt this team has any magic this year. But then they played Dallas in the first home game and they pulled a win out of the hat. So that was good – it was a pretty win, but a win nonetheless.

So they they go on the road and play Chicago. It used to be that Chicago was considered a rough team – lots of bullies ready to drop gloves. But I didn’t really see that in this game. There was a little pushing and shoving around the Goalies, but that is to be expected.

The fun thing about the Chicago game is that turned into a shootout and the Preds managed to send out a couple of average shooters to get a win out of it. So, huzzah!

How about those Redskins?

Great game today. I’m more and more impressed with this year’s team.

The Washington Redskins beat the Arizona Cardinals, 24 – 17 in a close, exciting game.

Next week is at Dallas against our age old nemesis, the Cowboys. There’s always been a rivalry between the Cowboys and the Redskins. It’s kinda poetic, don’t you think? Or maybe symbolic. It promises to be another good game.

Big Brother – 2

Tonight’s show was great. The veto competition was awesome. The contestants had to crawl through hundreds of gallons of honey, which really covered them in sticky goo. Then they had to bust up pillows filled with feathers, of course, to find little stiffed teddy bears. The person who found their batch of teddy bears first won the immunity. Of course, the guy who won was one who was put up for eviction. So there’s already some fun twists and turns in the drama.
