Harder to Find the Oldies But Goodies

Sometimes I really miss the Blockbuster and Hollywood Video stores. They were great for browsing a dozen aisles of old movies when you are bored and want something familiar to spend time with on the couch. There is an old movie that I haven’t seen in several years, but some friends mentioned it last night and now it is on my mind.

The movie starred Billy Bob Thornton – a great actor and a weird man. This movie really showcased his acting abilities because he totally makes you believe he is the character he’s playing. The movie title is “Slingblade.”

Since my buddies were talking about it I decided to try to rent it or watch it again. Ha! Good luck with that! There is no way to watch this movie unless I buy it from WalMart or if I get lucky to find it in a used DVD store. I don’t really want to buy the movie – I just want to watch it one more time. But there’s no way to do it around here.

Too Many Remotes

One of the dogs lost his ball under the sofa, so I had to get up and move the furniture around in the living room to find his ball. That dog would give me no peace while his ball was unreachable.

When I moved the sofa, the cushion fell off and that’s when I decided to give up watching the TV and just clean up the living room and the sofa. I don’t usually worry too much about the sofa, but for some reason there was a lot of loose change and weird things accumulating under that sofa cushion, so I decided to deal with it on the spot.

By the time I was done, I had found over $4.00 in loose change, a Bic lighter, a pair of sunglasses, a AA battery, three white socks and four remote controls. I had no idea I needed four remote controls in my living room until I rounded them up and laid them out on the coffee table.

Real Indian Casting

Came across a documentary on cable that told the story of the making of the movie, Dances With Wolves. It was pretty interesting to find out that none of the big movie companies would agree to make that movie. The only way the movie got funded was from Kevin Costner’s own money and then a few other Hollywood individuals who believed in Costner. It was a huge risk for everyone – Costner was young and just getting established as star, with no reputation for being a director yet. And he decided to both star in the movie and direct it.

Another thing that interested me is that they strove hard to be as historically accurate as possible, taking great care in the selection of shooting locations, costumes, etc. They used real buffalo, and during the filming of the stampede, Kevin Costner had fallen off his horse and been trampled slightly. Luckily he was not badly hurt.

They even cast real Native American Indians as the Indians, however the tribe that was called for in the script did not have enough Indians to fill all the parts. So instead they went to the Lakota Sioux and used the Lakota for all the Indian parts in the movie.

Monk, the Series

For some reason there is a long running TV show that I have never seen, called, “Monk.” I guess it ran exclusively on a channel that I normally don’t watch. Or it might be a cable channel show. But a friend of mine was talking about this show – it’s over and no new episodes are being made – and that he was going to buy the entire series on DVD.

It sounds like a cop/detective show with some comedy thrown in. The main character, Monk, suffers from extreme OCD, but turns that to everyone’s advantage when he inspects crime scenes and he helps solve a crime in each episode. That’s got my interest – I’d like to watch one or two shows and see what I’ve been missing.

3-D

We went to see a 3-D movie tonight and I was amazed at the effects this movie had, some of the items in the movie looked like they were going to hit us it was so real. I had never been to a 3-D movie and I do not know how many I will ever go to again but it was an experience I really enjoyed and was glad that we went to this movie. My grandson could not figure out the glasses and kept taking them off and I am sure he did not get the full effect of the 3-D and maybe we will have to take him to another 3-D movie when he gets a little older.

My luck

Sunday was the first show for this third season of the Ice Road Truckers and we had to work late, and we missed the first show I will have to check and see if it is demand, leave it up to Comcast they will not show it again, they always mess up my life and I wish there was another option for cable TV here, oh well I guess I can watch it Sunday night if they show the last weeks show before the new one like they did last year I will be fine.

UPDATE  The Ice Road Truckers comes on tonight at 9 pm thanks you History Channel.

Ice road truckers

The new season of the Ice Road Truckers starts on Sunday, this is a great show that I watch with interest every time it is on TV. It has been a long time since it was on and I am ready to watch the brave souls driving on the ice roads. I do not think that I could do it, I do not consider myself a coward but you have to draw the line somewhere and driving a big rig on ice is where I draw the line.

Big game

This week is a big week for me and my football teams. Vanderbilt really needs to beat Tennessee today and I really need Oklahoma to come big and beat Texas Tech. The wins would make it very interesting for bowl games and in the case of Oklahoma a big factor in making it to the national championship game against Alabama unless LSU beats the Tide in the SEC Championship game later on. Confused? Well so am I. Let us just hope all of my teams win today and then we can sort it out later on.

Race

One TV show that we really enjoy watching is the Amazing Race we set aside every Sunday to be able to sit on the couch with all of the dogs in attendance and watch this great show. We have been fans since the show started and will until it ends. The contrast between the pairs of races is so amazing, I love to see who can handle the pressure and who wilts under pressure. I think we would be a great pair for the race but I am sure we would keep the censors very busy, and that would be a test of how we do work together. I can not wait for next weeks race and I am starting the countdown right now.
